Summary of Goodwin's theory

Summarise the Main Points of the handout on Andrew Goodwin’s theory on Music Videos.

Andrew Goodwin’s theory is that he believes that traditional narratives for a Pop video based from ideas of “Todorov” who said that the structure of a narrative is on the equilibrium then the disruption and then back to equilibrium does not really apply to Pop videos. This is because most Pop videos approach a narrative from different angles to novels and films for example Rihanna 'Man Down'.

The reason for a different narrative structure is because Pop videos are built around songs; the singer is both the narrator and the character and also the singer most of the time looks directly at the camera which makes the audience feel more involved with the music video where ever they are. Theoretically, Pop songs are videos so they have a beginning and an ending. A video must have an end and this is reflected in the structure of music: it builds to a climax before fading away like the song “Science and Faith” by The Script and Rihanna 'Man Down'.

Also there are three types of relations with the song and the video, which are based on: ‘Illustration’ where the music video tells the story of the lyrics like the song “Love the way you lie” by Eminem ft Rihanna.

‘Amplification’ where the video doesn’t contradict the lyrics but they do add another layers of meaning like “World’s Greatest’ by R Kelly.

‘Disjuncture’ where the video contradicts with the lyrics like “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay.
