RESEARCH: Laura Mulvey

'In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly'                                    (Laura Mulvey, 1992)

Laura Mulvey looked at the representation in music video and she focused mainly on gender. She found that women were more sexualized in order to attract the male gaze.

This is Rihanna's video for her song rude boy, not only are the lyrics sexual but so is the video. I think the video is to attract men and maybe teenage boys, things in this video that will attract the male gaze are images of the glossed lips, and her wearing skin tight clothes.  This video also reinforces Mulvey's point about women being dismembered (only seeing the lips on screen).
