Audience Task:

Pop stars are, to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which women understand themselves more fully, even if by doing so they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars’ alleged preferences”.

                                                                                 (Paul Willis, 1990)

This quote is telling us that some songs sung by Pop artists can inspire young women like teenagers to deal with serious topics. The song “Firework” by Katy Perry demonstrates that you shouldn’t feel the need to be insecure, that you shouldn’t feel trapped by who you are – you are original and unique. The lyrics to the song says, “ You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine…just own the night ”. This metaphor is very emotive in describing how you should feel by allowing yourself to be who you are. It also shows that Pop artists these days do have an intimate relationship with their fans because this song for example was dedicated to her fans that have these feelings of insecurity.

To an extent, I do agree with this viewpoint but however, some artists songs have a very degrading meaning that shouldn’t influence or inspire their fans. I also do disagree with this viewpoint because it just focuses on the women’s feelings and relationship and not the men. Songs like “ The Rose ” by Westlife describe both the female and male relationships and helps to inspire feelings of love for one another even through difficult times.
