Research for music video: The state of the music industry

In class we looked at the music industry and how it has changed in the last 10 years. We focused on looking at how the production, distribution and exchange during the last 10 years.

We also looked at the article ’Music is thriving, but the business is dying. Who can make it pay again?' It talks about the music industry and how they are in serious financial trouble" Sales were down 7% last year in the UK and by nearly 10%in the United States, the world's largest music market." this was in 2010 they came up with these figures now in 2011 going on to 2012 it must of become even more worse. 

 

The main reason for this the internet and illegal file sharing it has become easier to share music more than ever before with social network with like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube. It has become more easier for upcoming artists and unsigned artist to create their own music because of all the new technology like adobe soundbooth were you can recode your own voice create and mix your our music with out the need to have a music contract.

Our group was a bit lost on what song to do so I have planed out all the things we have to think of using in the video. I have also made my own mood board for the Jessie J song 'Who you are' and I will disscus my idea with the group the next time we meet up. I liked the idea of having one loction to be in an dark abandoned buliding and I thinks this gose with theme I would like to make for our music video.

I just found out after making and planning possibilities for our own video using her song 'Who you are' that a music video was realised 2 days ago on the 29^th on YouTube but I still think that we could use the song and make a video reflecting on what we want our video to be like so I am not that worried about it already having a music video.

Research for Music Videos: Summarise what you have learnt about the Music Industry.

What I have learnt about the music industry is that firstly is the function of a music video where it’s to promote the singer/artists. The promotion is highly important because as they become recognisable through their songs and music videos. So the way that the music industries are targeting the public is through music channels on TV like MTV, or even more crucial is through the Internet. By having sites like Youtube and VEVO, it becomes a forum for the public to access and watch music videos whenever they want. 


Music videos can also become very popular as they can be shared through social networking sites such as Facebook and the music industry can advertise their artists on these social networking sites. It is really important that the music industry stay fresh and up to date with current times because otherwise, they will lose touch with the public, which means that Record Labels are going to lose money and eventually go downhill. So its important that advertising their artists should guarantee more exposure meaning more people will notice them and buy their albums or songs. 


However, figures show that in 2011, major record labels are in serious financial threat. The four big record labels are EMI, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and SONY & BMG. Sales were down by 7% last year in the UK and by nearly 10% in the United States who is the largest music market. Two of the major record labels – Sony & BMG and Warner Music Group admit that their pre-Christmas sales were down by 10% and 14%. Also adding more heat to the flame, more and more people are illegally downloading music – figures show that 1.2 billion illegal downloads were done in the UK in 2000. The music industry is really suffering, as they have not found the solution to repairing lost in CD sales. For example, “Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs” may have won the Grammy, but they have sold only 1.4 million albums worldwide. Nit only are the music industry suffering but as a result of their low turnout of CD sales, record shops like HMV are being affected as they cannot sell an increasing amount of CD’s, which meant that they had to close down 60 stores to make a profit.


However, there are some artists like Take That who with the arrival of the ex member Robbie Williams, can still manage to sell large quantities of CD’s and make large numbers of money through their sold out tours which means that record labels like Universal, who manage Take That can see profits sky rocketing. In my opinion, the way that the Music Industry can rise up again is through combating Piracy though sites like Itunes and giving the audience a new angle to watch music videos and to hear songs.

Looking at this video and Andrew Goodwin's theory I think this music video this is an disjuncture because it has little connection with the video and the lyrics. I like the way they have edited this video with the fast pasted jump cuts.

Planning for Music Video

Friday's lesson with Annabel was just so .... i really have no words; that's how bad it looks at the moment. None of us want to be in the actual film, and so there we have a problem. We were given the idea for someone from outside the college to come and act the role, but then we'd be relying on someone that isn't a guarantee nor can we ask them to come back time and time again encase any of the shots had to be done again.

 

But.... we've all decided to fish up a few new idea's and maybe a new song, and try get Mika's sister to play the role in the music video, if not then we''ll manage to sort something out by Monday.

Research for Music video: Skills Audit

Looking back at the As year of media.. i have to say my skills with using the Mac's were really limited, and honestly at the moment they still are. I just find those machines really complicated. Hopefully when we go back to the actual editing this time round i will be more involved in the editing s then i can have a real go at it and truly expand my editing skills. 

I mean i didn't really get a go to really learn how to use the editing software. Anyway moving away from that and looking at my camera skill's, i wasn't that bad on i because i had done media for my GCSE's, so using the camera and fulfilling those shots we had planned to do wasn't really a mission, but this time round i hope to have a more of challenge when t comes to the actual filming, just to see how i can cope with it.
