Research on Marketing

I was just going into HMV just to see where exactly Jessie J's new album would be kept. It's kept nearly at the beginning of the shop floor under the category of chart. As soon as i got in and walked a little down all the top names were at the front of the shop.

Her album, the CD case is 7.99 and the digipak is is 13.99. Only because this one has an exclusive bonus tracks and a DVD.

This just shows how far an artist would go and how dedicated a fan can be.

Mock up's

This is just a quick video of my moch up digipak

The Do's and Don't's

In one of the lesson's before we actually started our digipaks we were give the Do's and Don't's lesson by Rebbecca. Along with that there was also previous work shown to us which were examples of the this we shouldn't do in our digipak's and what we should do.

Things not to do:

- Have weird style font's where the customers won't understand e.g.

- Don't use colours which are nerving to the eyes and makes the text on the digipak unable to be read. e.g.

-Avoid using still shots from the actual music video because the picture is most likely to be out of focus and won't look clear.

Things to do:

- Do use an appropriate font which will be easy for customers to read even from a certain distance
- Theres the convention of only using three colours and they are to be muted colours.

Those that i have mentioned so far are the ones which Rebbecca stressed upon the most. The rest of the Do's and Don't's are noted on the sheet that we were given

In todays lesson we started to do our digipak I started off by looking at all to picture I took of the artist before I selected which one I wanted to use for my digipak.

screen shots

This a screen shot of my first bit of work that i have produced so far on my actual digipak. As planned in my mock up i decided i wanted a floral look to the design.
At the moment I've only managed to get four flowers on to it because I'm just finding the software quiet difficult to use. So hopefully after another try i should be able to get the gist of it.

Research; Ancilliary Products

In school, I was looking through the application ‘Fontcase’, to see some potential fonts and design that might look appealing on my ancillary products = Digipak and Advertisement.

I went through a couple which caught my eye and got me thinking of how it would accentuate my ancillary products. In the first design of fonts, you can see that I was looking at how the shape of the letters become long almost becoming a border which got me thinking that it could be the birder around the digipak and the advert. You see that I wrote down ‘Who You Are’ because that is the title of my Digipak and advert.

The second design that I went through in ‘Fontcase’ was this design. I thought that the idea of the lettering split in half gives an isolated and misplaced feeling which perfectly coincides with the lyrics of the song. You can see that I wrote ‘Yumi’ because she is our artist and you must have the artist name and picture in both the ancillary products because you are meant to promote the artist.

The third design I wanted the effect that the words looked like it was written by hand because it feels as if the artist herself has written it personally which gives a special quality to the Digipak which entices the audience to buy it. I like this design because you can experiment how it should look like.

The fourth design caught my eye because this was an even more exaggerated version of the handwriting effect. However, this design doesn’t seem to work because it feels to composed and too stiff.

Pictures

These are just some of the Pictures that im considering to use within my digipak

some examples of advertisements - i really love the colours used on the posters, it really stands out, i want the colour scheme to be consistent so that they reflect each other.
Hi Rebecca

I'm not too well, so i wont be able to come in tomorrow. But hopefully i'll see you tomorrow to get any work from today

Planning Ancillary Products

During one of the lesson's we had a chance of deciding what kind of colours we would use on our digipak's. We found out that the colours mostly used on digipaks were muted colours, mainly because of it being not to hard on the eyes of but attractive to them. More easy to catch their attention.

I thought to have muted colours of red, which i feel kind of sets the mood of the song that i have chosen. These are some pictures of the colours i want.

The font used on Rihanna's album cover. Its simple and easy to read, and the whole purpose for this use of simple font is for the customer to easily read the artists name.

Feedback from viewers

I got some feedback from viewers about what they thought of our video, it was mainly all positive which was good =).

The cinema

Just a quick post, yesterday we went to the cinema to watch everybody’s music video. One thing I noticed was that they were all really good. When I video came on I was really nervous as to what the audience would think of it, what made it worse was there was a jump in our video (well that made it memorable). But we got a good round of applause and people said they really enjoyed it.

Who you are wordle

This is a wordle for Jessie J's 'Who You Are' song.

From this we can see that the word okay and yeah comes up quite alot. I did this beacause although the song is about being true to yourself its interesting to see what words appear in the song the most.

Analysis of previous student work

This is a CD cover created by a previous student. I really like the bright colours used as its really eye catching. The front cover is very interesting as the pose works perfectly well with the banner above her. Also the font chosen is very nice, its clear to read even though it is cursive.

The fact that they have incoporated the helicopter from the video on to the CD cover is very good intertextuality and it shows a clear connection between the two products. The inner left panel carry's on that 'animated' theme with the sun and her looking up at it with a speech bubble coming from her.

The advert carrys on the same theme and uses the same album cover picture. This gives consumers/ the auidence a clear connection showing that all porducts are related. Overall its a very good poster, however my one criticism is that the blue writing is hard to read.

Advert Analysis

This is the poster for Rihanna's Loud album. In the top left hand corner you can see Rihanna's iconic 'R' logo. The image which take's up most of the poster is from her 'Only girl in the world' video.

Here is a still from the video in which you can see the red leaves and her red hair.

The writing is written in a clear font, with all the colours contrasting the red with the black and the black and white. On the poster im not sure which is biggest, the release date, the album name or Rihanna. And underneath it all is the name of the record label.

I think this advert works really well, as its clear concise and gives all the required information.

Researching Ancillary Products: Analyse Three Advertisements

All of these Advertisements relate to the genre of RNB and HipHop and show conventionally to thier audience where and when they can go watch thier favourite artist live or by thier albums. Also, thier names are the biggest thing on he avert to promote them and so that thier names can stand out from other adverts so that it attracts peoples attention. The colouring in all of these are striking again to catch peoples atention.

Researching Ancillary Products: Analyse Three Digipaks that relate to your Genre and Audeince

Our song called ‘Who You Are’ by Jessie J, the genre that the song and Jessie J belongs to is more of RNB and HipHop. I wanted to find other artist/s that belong in this same genre.

I was researching digipaks from the genre of RNB and HipHop and found a four-panel digipak by Nicole Sherzinger. I really like this digipak because firstly, I like the images of the artist because they illustrate the kind of artist she is and the kind of music that might be included in the digipak – it looks to be filled with ballads and heartfelt emotional songs. The front cover is really good because it follows the convention of most digipaks where there is a medium close up of the artist. For my own ideas, I was inspired from this digipak because of the softness of colours used to illustrate the love and passion of the lyrics of the song.

I like the font of the texts and how its positioned near to the bottom right of the digipak so the main focus is on he artist. Both images of Nicole Sherzinger on the front and back of the digipak clarifies the natural beauty which I think is meant not only to reflect the songs on he digipak but to also inspire her audience to stay true to who you are. On the back panel, I like how the image of the whole of the artist is used and displayed on the right to position the track list, so that both the artist and the songs connect. This is really a good idea that I have considered doing with my own version of a digipak. This digipak reflects the genre of RNB and HipHop because of the style of music that she sings and how her audience will now the lyrics of the songs.

The second digipak that I was researching on that connects with the same genre of RNB and HipHop is Cher Lloyd’s digipak. I really like this digipak because of the creativity that has been used. I firstly like how the whole of Cher Lloyd has been used for the front cover and how she is positioned by turning upside down to show how she is – fun, eccentric and like to have a laugh – illustrating her personality. I also like the illustrations used for the background because it gives an animated feel and a sense of creativeness with the songs – no all conventional songs, reflecting not a conventional singer. I like the bright colouring used because it makes the digipak stand out and creates a uniqueness as a digipak – an idea that has inspired my idea process for when I makes my own digipak.

This digipak shouts out how fun and exuberant this digipak will be with the songs and conveys to the audience of how Cher Lloyd is – making us feel more connected with her by feeling we can relate to her. The way this reflects the genre is by clarifying the up tempo of the music and the fun and speed of it through the vivid colouring and illustrations. Her audience will be aware of this style because of how Cher Lloyd sings and raps, and her clothing show an urban lifestyle yet a pop star look.

The third digipak that I researched for this same genre is Rihanna. In this digipak I really love because firstly, it promotes Rihanna perfectly by having her whole face making up the front panel. I like the filter of the red used because it creates a feeling of love and desire from the digipak and her facial expression of having her closing her eyes and her lips a little bit open, show he seductiveness of her. It illustrates how she is as an artist and what you can expect from her through her songs. The theme of red is clearly important because it is consistent with the other panels. I like how they thought really hard on the mise en scene because they want to convey the idea of love because they use the colour red and inside the digipak, there are roses connoting love and heart brake – a contrast of what you might be expecting with he songs.

Visually, its amazing because it looks very attractive. I like how the images of Rihanna runs through both the inside panels. What I found interesting is that the texts of the artist name and the digipak feels close and intimate because even though they are separated, it feels compact. I also like how there is a glimmer of shine across the front cover showing a symbol of importance. I have been inspired from this digipak by the consistency of one colour – red, to reflect the feeling of the songs and the artist.

The way it reflects to the genre is because even tough there is love songs and heartbreak songs, the edginess of the instrumentals and the lyrics create the RNB and HipHop that makes Rihanna famous. Her audience will expect this and know they types of songs that she makes. However, the visual on the digipak does contrasts her earlier styles of her earlier digipaks because they often have dark colourings and lots of shadows to reflect the genre. I like how this digipak challenges her other ones by making it look different even though its still RNB and HipHop, giving it a new feel to it.

Researching Ancillary Products: Reviewing Last year's Student Products

During Friday 2nd December lesson, I was given the task to look at examples of last years digipaks and advertisements to see how there ones fulfil the requirements of exactly how they should look like and hopefully be inspired by some to help with my own idea process. I looked through many digipaks and advertisements and saw a couple that I liked.

This digipak created b Holly Grant called ‘Coco Blue’, I really liked because of the visuals. I really like the theme of the colour blue and how it is consistent through the other panels. She made the colour blue look aesthetically pleasing to the eye then having it look too overpowering. She has followed the convention of most digipak covers where the artist is in the front cover. However, she has chosen to have the whole of the artist on the front cover instead of just having a close up which works really well because her costume complements the digipak and the background.

I like the font in the text because it is really clear even though she has used a calligraphy font that is sometimes hard to read but she has chosen one that is easy to read. I like the colour combination of the texts from blue to red because it gives a contrasting effect but doesn’t overpower the digipak but it does make it stand out. I do like the little cartoon images that she has used because it adds on to animated feel of the song and the digipak.

Her advertisement is consistent with her digipak, which works really well. The consistency with the same images of the artist and the same usage of he texts create a link between the digipak and advert to make them connected and not look entirely different like two different songs and artists. She has added the relevant information that normally goes onto an advertisement to promote the artist and the album/digipak.

The second creation of a digipak and advertisement by last year’s student is called ‘Y. Shocker’. I really love this digipak because I think the front cover is absolutely amazing in promoting who the artist is. It clearly does this by illustrating the personality of the artist on the front cover through his facial expressions. There are three different images used to show the artist because it illustrates that there is more sides to him and shows a variety of different feelings on the digipak. The student has decided to go with the medium close up show conventionally because the whole point of the digipak is to promote the artist and his/her songs. I like the black and white effect used inside the panels because it creates questions of who the artist is which makes us want to know the answer which we can only find through buying the digipak to listen to the songs.

The advertisement is consistent with he digipak because they use the digipak in the advert and maintain the same type of text and colour theme. The simplicity of the advert is effective because it seems to fit nicely with the digipak and it works.

The third creation of a digipak and advertisement by last year’s student is called ‘Melody Davies’. The only thing that I like abut this digipak are the images of he artist because they are photographed really well because they look professional and they clearly thought carefully about the stance that she should take to convey to the audience of how she is feeling. What  don like about this digipak is the font of the texts used because it is really hard to read and the colour for the fonts because they take its to overpowering and they don look good together with the images – it looks too overcrowded.

However, the advertisement seems to look better maybe because of the size of the advert. I like the consistency of the images and how thought out it is with how she is positioned. I like the illustration of the circles but again, the font and the colour used seems to be distracting and the positioning of the texts seems all over the place.
